Gilmer High track continued its season with two more meets.
The GHS Bobcats and Lady Cats joined East Hall at Dawson County last Tuesday.
The Lady Cats had multiple top finishes across the meet. Jennifer Garcia won both the 1,600-meter run (5:49.76) and 3,200 (12:22.94), while also adding a third-place finish in the 800 (2:47.23). Lauren Smith captured first in the 800-meter run (2:43.85).
Isabella Evans sprinted to a runner-up finish in the 100-meter dash (13.87). Kayla Tercero placed second in the 300-meter hurdles (59.38). The relay teams were also strong, with the 4x800-meter relay taking first place and both the 4x100 and 4x200 relays finishing second.
In the field events, Lilyan Cook dominated with first-place finishes the discus (104’ 8”) and shot put (32’ 2.5”). Evans added another victory in the long jump (14’ 7”).
Bobcat Seth Turner led the distance runners with a first-place finish in the 800 (2:12.43), and he secured third in the mile (5:20.35). Jeremy Martinez added a runner-up placement in the 3,200 (11:38.76) and 1,600 (5:07.76) while he was third in the 800 (2:15.93).
The relay teams excelled, as the 4x800 team claimed first place, while the 4x100, 4x200 and 4x400 teams each earned runner-up finishes. Jerimiah Few placed third in the 300-meter hurdles (52.53).
In the field events, Cheyne Smith captured first place in the pole vault (9’ 6”), while Dawson Richard won the discus with a throw of 129’ 6”. Mason West added a runner-up finish in the high jump (5’ 4”). Nate Wiseley placed second in the triple jump (39’ 2.25”).
Gilmer made the short ride to Jasper Thursday. They took on the host Dragons, Union County and White County, and the Cats finished fourth in both standings.
The Lady Cat quartet of Smith, Ella Schwartz, Garcia and Morgan Palmeri set the school’s new record in the 4x800. The previous mark of 11:04.43 was supplanted by their time of 11:02.62, which was fast enough for second place.
Garcia paced GHS distance runners with a third-place finish in the 80 (2:43.58).
Cook turned in another top performance of the meet, winning the discus with a toss of 108’ 1” and adding a second-place finish in the shot put (32’ 5”).
The Bobcats were led by a handful of top-three finishes. Richard claimed first place in the discus once again with a throw of 131’ 7”. Coleman Wollard secured a third-place finish in the shot put (37’ 6”).
Turner was third in the 800 (2:16.54). The 4x800-meter relay team added a runner-up performance. Smith placed third in the pole vault (10’ 0”).
