The Gilmer High Lady Cats ended the cross-country season in the top half of the classification.
GHS attended the Class 3A Cross-Country Championship last Saturday in Carrollton. The Cats finished 11th in the field of 24, and all GHS point scorers landed inside the top 100.
“It really is one of the most amazing seasons ever,” said head coach Tommy Jones. “We’ve had four different girls finish first (on the team at different races). I don’t think I’ve ever had three in one season. It’s rare to even have two. Normally, your No. 1 runner is first every race. My No. 5 runner finished second one race.
“They’re all packed together so tight (with their times), and that’s how they were able to do so well as a team. It was amazing and one of the coolest things I’ve been a part of.”
Freshman Jennifer Garcia was the top Lady Cat on the day, and she posted a 5K time of 23:25.85 for 44th. Junior Salma Gonzalez was next and crossed the finish line in 23:37.13 for 46th. Sophomore Estephany Becerra placed 61st at 24:03.69.
The freshman duo of Morgan Palmeri (24:51.72) and Allison Hernandez (25:39.55) placed 84th and 99th.
Lady Cat Jayla Walker completed the course in 25:54.63 for 104th, and Braelyn Nolasco was 130th at 28:16.44.
North Hall claimed the state championship, and Trojan Clodagh O’Bryant defended her individual title once again with a time of 20:07.90.
