Gilmer Bobcat wrestlers turned in another runner-up tournament performance.
The annual Coal Mountain Classic at North Forsyth High School drew 15 teams Dec. 19-20. GHS placed second by half of a point to Richmond Hill, and 12 Bobcats reached the medal stand.
“Richmond Hill is the team that finished ahead of us at the Panther Invitational (Dec. 6),” said head coach Caleb Waddell. “We looked very solid, and I’m very impressed with the wrestling these boys are doing.”
Gilmer’s champions could be found in the lowest and highest weights at the tournament as Deyson Lopez (106 pounds) and heavyweight Denny Ramirez were first.
Bobcats Manny Velasquez (138), Adolfo Bautista (150) and Braelyn Nelson (157) made their way to the finals as well and placed second.
Seven GHS wrestlers battled through the consolation bracket to score team points. Daniel Escobar (120) and Dawson Richard (165) secured third place, while the duo of Liandro Diaz (113) and Jackson Crater (144) took fourth.
Bobcats Eddie Alonzo (126), Alex Alonzo (132) and Gaspar Tercero (175) made up Gilmer’s fifth-place finishers.
GHS returned to the dual scene at press deadline at White County’s Yonah Mountain Duals.
