The Gilmer High Lady Cats picked up a nonregion volleyball win on senior night.
Ahead of last Thursday’s triumph, GHS hit the road Tuesday and traveled to Gwinnett County to meet region foes Wesleyan and Lumpkin County. The host Wolves and Indians both topped the Cats, 2-0.
GHS bounced back two days later for a three-set win over the Cass Colonels, 2-1. The Cats closed out the night with a loss to the Murray County Indians by the same margin.
“After the almost two-hour drive to Wesleyan, we got off to a sluggish start,” said head coach Donna Parks. “We had several missed serves and had more attack errors than usual. We seemed to rebound a little by the time we played Lumpkin.”
Wesleyan won the match by scores of 25-13 and 25-7. The Cats were limited to 10 kills, which were scored by Adrian Thompson (four) and Brooke Wilson (three), while Taylor McCormick, Libby Pike and Hali Hice all had one each. Anneliese Vaughn delivered four assists and Thompson was there for three.
Dig leaders included Wilson (eight), Gracie Cain (six), Vaughn (five), Thompson (three), McCormick (two) and Hice and Aliza Chastain (one apiece). McCormick and Vaughn each blocked a pair of Wesleyan hits.
GHS played a closer match versus Lumpkin, who claimed wins of 25-15 and 25-22. Gilmer tallied eight aces this time around, and Thompson’s three were followed by Pike’s two as Vaughn, Wilson and McCormick all finished with one.
Hice and Thompson led the way with three kills each, while McCormick, Wilson and Vaughn all tallied two. Setters Thompson and Vaughn were once again assist leaders with four apiece. Vaughn also dug six LCHS hits, and the remaining were secured by McCormick (five), Thompson and Wilson (three each), Cain and Arifah Jones (two each) and Hice (one).
Parks adjusted Gilmer’s rotation for Thursday’s matches. After Cass won the opening set (25-19), GHS responded with wins of 26-24 and 15-7.
The benefactors of Thompson’s 11 assists and Vaughn’s nine were McCormick with seven kills, Wilson with five and Hice with three. Vaughn and Thompson were also there for four and three kills, respectively.
Vaughn added two aces and a block, while Hice and McCormick both tallied two blocks. Thompson also had a block and ace.
Murray took set one 25-17, and GHS won the second, 25-21. A 15-7 Murray victory in the third set decided the match in its favor.
GHS has a 3-14 overall record and is 1-7 versus region opponents. The Cats traveled to West Hall at press deadline and will be in Dalton Thursday to meet Christian Heritage.
