A pair of old rivals met for a track and field dual meet.
The Gilmer High Bobcats and Lady Cats made the short trip to Blue Ridge last Tuesday to take on Fannin County. Not much separated the teams as all four won seven events in the boys and girls divisions.
The Lady Cats dominated field events by winning four of five. First place finishers included Taylor McCormick in the high jump (5’ 2”) and triple jump (31’ 9 1/2”) and Jocelyn Birko in the discus (84’ 9”) and shot put (30’ 4”). Bobcat Andrew Mooney was there for first in the triple jump at 37’ 10 1/2”.
The Lady Cats secured a pair of individual first-place finishes in running events. Kenzie Sewell had the top time in the 200-meter dash (28.71), and Madison Stanley led the way in the 3,200-meter run (14:19.15). Their 4x400 relay team finished atop the field in 5:05.18.
The Bobcats turned in four individual top placements in running events and included Hunter Watkins (100 meters, 11.69) and Mooney (400, 55.78). Carson Purvis led the way in the 800-meter run (2:22.61) and 1,600 (4:42.70). GHS won the 4x800 and 4x400 relays with respective times of 10:57.32 and 3:35.67.
The Bobcats added nine more runner-up placements. Kendall Sanders was second in both the 110- (19.25) and 300-meter hurdles (47.67). Remaining runners-up were Issac Rellinger (200, 25.38), Purvis (3,200, 11:16.77), Isaac Freeman (high jump, 5’ 10”), Christian Sumner (triple jump, 36’ 4 1/4”), John Keener (pole vault, 10’) and Dominic Tarantino (discus, 116’ 11”). They were also second in the 4x100 relay at 46.16.
Lady Cat second-place finishers were Sewell (100, 13.47 and high jump, 4’ 6”), Josephine Royer (400, 1:08.44), Stanley (1,600, 6:06.24), Birko (100 hurdles, 19.47), McCormick (300 hurdles, 56.33) and Kayleigh Robbins (triple jump, 28’ 10 1/2”). The Lady Cats’ 4x100 relay team finished in 54.95.
GHS will host Pickens and Murray County April 12 for a meet scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m.
