The Gilmer Lady Cats played their first away flag football game and came home with a defeat.
GHS made its way to Heritage last Thursday, and the Cats struggled to find offensive consistency against the Generals. HHS took a touchdown lead into the half and added one more for a 12-0 victory.
The game was only the fifth in GHS history and the Cats’ record now stands at 2-3. Head coach Chad Miller noted they will have five more players joining the team.
“We came out a little sluggish and had trouble getting our offense going,” Miller said.
“We’re doing well, we’re still learning a lot and improving. We have all of the softball and volleyball girls now since their seasons have ended. That will give us a little bit of a boost too with a few more athletes we’ve gathered. It’s really going to help quite a bit.”
The Generals struck for a touchdown in the second and third quarters, and GHS made stops on both conversion attempts.
The junior varsity Lady Cats also squared off against the Generals and fell by an identical score, 12-0.
“It was pretty much the same as the varsity game,” Miller said. “They ran the ball a lot and we had a little trouble pulling flags and stopping the run. That’s the tough part about being a young team.”
Gilmer will be back at Huff-Mosley Memorial Stadium Thursday. The Cats will take on Rome at 5:30 p.m. and Dawson County at 8 p.m.
