Five Gilmer High School basketball players earned All-Region 7-3A honors.
Bobcat junior Preston McVey was named to the first team. Senior Keegen Bryant secured a second-team selection on the boys side.
For the girls, Lady Cat Jace Sanderson locked up a first-team spot. Seniors Paula Robertson and Bree Burnette and freshman Mak Taylor were voted to the second team.
McVey was the Bobcats’ leading scorer (14.1 points per game) and rebounder (eight). He shot 60.8 percent from the field and blocked 16 shots.
Bryant left his name in the Bobcat record book and will graduate as the program’s all-time assist leader (325) and ranks fourth in points (1,362). He also set the program standard for assists in a season (92) during his sophomore year.
As a senior, Bryant averaged 12.6 points, 4.3 rebounds, 2.9 assists, 1.4 steals and made 39.1 percent of his shots.
Sanderson netted 12.6 points per game to go with 4.1 rebounds. She averaged 1.3 steals, which was second on the team.
Robertson scored 8.2 points to go with 4.9 rebounds. Burnette led the Cats in assists (2.7) and steals (2.2) and averaged 7.2 points. Taylor was there for 9.9 points, 2.0 assists and 1.2 steals per game. She led GHS by a wide margin when it came to free throws at 89 percent.
The region only selects 10 players each for the boys and girls all-region squads, but senior Lady Cat Chelsey Griggs had a notable season as well. She was Gilmer’s leading rebounder with 7.6 per game and also had the best shooting percentage (40) and most blocks (18). Griggs averaged 2.1 assists and 1.3 steals per game.
