Clear Creek wrestling hosted White County last Tuesday, and the Bobcats sent the Warriors back to Cleveland with a 60-18 loss.
White forfeited to Chase Cantrell (79 pounds) while both Carter Ortis (102) and John Oliver (275) won by decision.
Clear Creek’s remaining wins all came via pin and were secured by Braelyn Nelson (94), Manuel Velasquez (118), Gaspar Tercero (125), Bo Cronic (132), Isaiah Goodwin (139), Angel Garcia (147), Juan Tercero (165) and Denny Ramirez (210).
CCMS hosted the Bobcat Invitational Saturday and placed fifth at the traditional event with 97 points.
It was an unseeded tournament, and some weight classes came down to the luck of the draw.
CCMS entered wrestlers in 13 of 15 weight classes and walked away with eight total placements, which included Goodwin who was the champion at 139.
Bobcats Ortis placed second, Nelson, Velasquez and Ramirez took third, while Cronic, Juan Tercero and Fabian Lopez (180) finished fourth.
“‘I’m extremely happy with how our guys wrestled,” said CCMS head coach Thomas Glanton. “We had a couple close matches that could have gone either way. Our guys came out and wrestled tough.
“Some who haven’t lost yet, lost. In my opinion, it’s good to lose. Some of our guys need to be humbled and learn from that going on. Some of our first-year guys wrestled well and surprised in a lot of good ways.”
Tift County, the defending middle school dual state champions, won the event with 246 points followed by McCallie, Tenn. (173.5), Jefferson (138), Pickens (127), Gilmer, Hart County (75), Jackson County (73) and Union County (56.5).
“We put together the toughest middle school tournament in north Georgia, especially this weekend and maybe for the entire season,” Glanton said. “Anytime Jefferson gets third, you know it’s a pretty tough tournament.”
CCMS will wrestle in the league tournament Dec. 17-18. Glanton outlined what he plans to work on at practice ahead of the event.
“We need to focus on the fundamentals and cut out the small mistakes,” he said. “If we can do that and stay in position throughout the match, we’re going to be a lot better off. We’re going to focus on being tough and scoring from top, bottom and on our feet. That’s our game plan, to keep working hard and get better.”
