The Clear Creek Lady Cats are off to a 3-1 record in league play.
CCMS kicked off its softball season Aug. 5 at home against Pickens, and the Dragonettes returned to Jasper with a 9-1 loss. The Cats traveled to Dawson County two days later and fell to the Tigers, 11-6.
The Cats dropped their Aug. 12 game to the White County Warriors at home, 17-10. CCMS was back in the win column last Wednesday as the Cats crushed the Union County Panthers, 12-0.Here are some game recaps for CCMS softball.
The Cats started their season in grand fashion when they crushed Pickens. Braley Stewart had a dominant pitching performance and struck out 10 Dragonettes in five innings. When Pickens put the ball in play, the Cats were there to make the play and did not commit any errors.
Clear Creek’s big inning came in the fourth when the Cats erupted for five runs. Lily Teague doubled home a run, and three more were added to the Cats’ tally on Neeyah McDaniel’s triple.
Stewart drove in a pair of runs, and also recorded a hit and RBI were Brenlee Daniel, Kali McCardle and Abby Murillo. Daniel and Kensie Farmer also stole a base for the CCMS.
At Dawson, Jocelyn McColumn got the start, and she was relieved by Kaitlyn Bedwell and McKenly Holt.
“The game was nip and tuck until some timely hits occurred by Dawson late in the game to pull ahead for victory,” said head coach Tina McDaniel.
Daniel led the way with three hits for CCMS, which included a double. McDaniel doubled as well and finished with two hits. Jessie Wheeler, Mattie Jones, McCardle, Murillo and Lily Teague each had a hit for the Cats as well.
CCMS could not have asked for a better start against White County. The Cats’ offensive barrage led to 10 runs in the first inning as they batted around. McDaniel tripled once again for two CCMS runs. Murrilo had two hits in the inning and drove in four runs. Also notching RBI singles were Lady Cats Jones and Holt, while both Wheeler and Teague drew bases loaded walks.
“We failed to score any runs after that as White made a pitching change,” McDaniel said. “Untimely errors on the Lady Cats’ part helped the Lady Warriors chip away at the lead.”
WCMS evened the score by the third inning. In their next at-bat, the Warriors tallied five hits for the game’s remaining seven runs.
Stewart fanned 12 Panthers Wednesday at Union, and the Cats continued to play solid defense.
CCMS smacked 11 hits offensively as Maylee Bramlett, Murillo and Teague all finished with two. Bramlett notched two RBIs, and one of those was driven in with a first inning triple. Teague also swiped three bases on the day.
CCMS is 2-2 versus league opponents.
