The Clear Creek Lady Cats are 2-0 after their first week of league softball games.
The Cats hosted Dawson County last Tuesday and downed the Tigers, 7-6. CCMS was back on its home field the following day as the White County Warriors came to town. The Cats racked up nine hits and took advantage of eight WCMS errors for an 10-3 triumph.
Lady Cat McKenna Taylor’s two out single set the stage for CCMS in the first inning versus White. Wild pitches allowed her to advance to third, and she scored on a Warrior error. White got two runs back in the third inning without recording a hit. A pair of walks, an error and three passed balls allowed WCMS to slip ahead, 2-1.
The Warriors’ lead was short lived as the Cats went ahead for good in their half of the inning. Makayla Martin got things started when she was hit by a pitch. She then stole second and advanced to third on Mia Henson’s successful bunt. CCMS took a 3-2 lead when Taylor grounded out.
Following a Jaylee McDaniel double and infield hit by Lily Jones, WCHS attempted to get an out at home when Elainah Cox hit a grounder to first. The throw was late and CCMS led, 4-2.
White committed three straight errors to begin the bottom of the fourth for the Cats’ fifth run. Next, White’s catcher made a throw to third base, but Martin, who was at second, did not attempt to steal. The Warriors then made three throwing errors when attempting to get the ball back to the pitcher as Martin raced around the bases to bump the Cats’ lead to 6-2.
White plated its third and final run in the fifth and it was unearned.
CCMS ended the game in the sixth. Melissa Rassmusen led off the inning with an infield hit, and she scored on Maddie Patterson’s single to right. CCMS loaded the bases on a bunt by Martin while Braylee Stewart reached on a fielder’s choice.
Another unsuccessful attempt to get an out added the Cats’ eighth run, an error accounted for the ninth, and another was plated on McDaniel’s single to right.
Sarah Dale started the game and pitched three innings, and gave up a hit and struck out five. Stewart took over for the final three innings and she fanned four and surrendered three hits.
