With a state volleyball spot on the line, the Gilmer Lady Cats fell to the LaFayette Ramblers.
The GHS Cats made the trip to LaFayette last Thursday for the opening round of the Region 7-3A tournament. The hometown Ramblers earned a sweep to eliminate the Cats and end their season.
With only seven teams in the region, first round winners earned a state tournament berth. The Ramblers secured their state destination by topping the Cats in the best-of-five-set match, 25-19, 25-9 and 25-14.
GHS scored 15 kills, which was half as many as LaFayette. Lady Cat Lilyan Cook finished with seven, Jace Sanderson had four and Madison Bradshaw totaled three. Bradshaw also added seven assists, four digs and two aces. Fellow senior Caylee Elrod tallied two aces as well.
Aliza Chastain had seven digs and was followed by Sanderson and Katie Fink (three apiece) and Maddie Usry and Grace Bramlett (two). Sanderson also added five assists.
GHS posted a 5-32 seasonal record and was 3-9 against region opponents.
