Gilmer High volleyball added a region win to their tally.
The Lady Cats were at Northwest Whitfield last Tuesday for a pair of region matches. GHS fell to the host Bruins 2-0 and defeated Ridgeland, 2-1.
GHS was at home two days later for nonregion matches against Flowery Branch and Union County. The Cats took down Flowery Branch 2-0 and lost to Union by the same margin.
“We came out really strong against Northwest but gave up some runs that allowed them to take both sets from us, which was very disappointing. We got the win versus Ridgeland, and I think the girls were a little upset after not being able to finish the drill against Northwest,” said head coach Maria Huelsman.
“Ridgeland thumped us in the first set, and then we came back and thumped them and took care of business. It’s a testament to the young ones.”
Northwest was victorious with set wins of 25-17 and 27-25. Ridgeland took the opening set 25-16 before GHS bounced back for wins of 25-11 and 15-10.
The Cats disposed of Flowery Branch 25-11 and 25-7. The Union match pitted the teams against each other after playing a week prior. UCHS came out on top with set victories of 25-8 and 25-15.
“We took care of Flowery Branch pretty easily,” said Huelsman. “A week before we lost to Union in three sets, and I don’t feel like we played as well as we did the first time. The first set was really ugly and we played much better in the second set, but I don’t think it was our best ball.”
GHS is 12-20 overall and 3-6 versus region teams. Gilmer wrapped up region play at press deadline against Northwest and Adairsville.
“We do have a lot on the line, and we need to secure these two wins,” Huelsman said. “Going into the region tournament, out goal is to obviously make the state playoffs. We should be higher than (our current) fifth (place standing). I do want to say, we are ranked 24th in (the) Class 3A (power rankings).”
