The Gilmer Lady Cats were on the field for a nonregion soccer match ahead of spring break.
GHS hosted Dalton (11-4) last Tuesday, and the Catamounts controlled the action and scoreboard. DHS scored a pair of goals in the first half and racked up five more in the second for a 7-0 victory.
Gilmer had the first scoring opportunity six minutes into the game. Lady Cat Maggie Thompson’s volley was wide from 20 yards. Dalton’s third shot found the back of the net after attacking down the left flank. A shot at the near post gave Dalton a 1-0 lead after 14 minutes of play.
Ten minutes later, DHS attacked through the middle of the field for a two-goal edge.
GHS goalkeeper Mattie Jones was pressed into duty early and often in the second half. She made three saves through 14 minutes, but the shots did not stop. Six more shots came over an 11-minute span, and Jones saved the three that were on target.
However, the Cats scored an own goal with 13 minutes to play to fall behind, 3-0. DHS tacked on four more goals as the clock ticked away.
Gilmer is 5-11 overall and returns to the field April 14 at Union County (13-2).
