Gilmer High School tennis closed out the regular season last week.
The GHS Bobcats and Lady Cats were in North Hall Tuesday for their region finale and both lost, 5-0. Gilmer hosted archrival Pickens two days later for senior night. The Bobcats got the sweep this time around while the Lady Cats were defeated, 3-2.
Bobcat Rylan Freeman had the most success versus North Hall in the No. 3 singles spot. He won five games in a 6-4, 6-1 loss. Top single Ethan Cole fell 6-3, 6-1, and No. 2 Law Lykins dropped his match 6-3, 6-0.
The doubles teams of Ethan Banks and J.D. Taylor and Larz Fowler and Eder Martinez both lost 6-1, 6-1.
Cole dropped his opening set versus Pickens before a 6-4 victory and 10-3 tiebreaker in the third. Lykins won 6-3, 6-1, and the duo of Banks and Taylor did not lose a game in their straight set triumph. Fowler and Martinez won 6-0, 6-2, and PHS did not have a No. 3 single.
Gilmer’s Lyla Engle won her second set versus North Hall, 7-5, between losses of 6-2 and 6-4. The Trojans won remaining matches in straight sets. They secured singles wins over Cats Ollie Burnett (6-0, 6-4) and Lyric Lowman (6-1, 6-1).
NHHS completed the sweep with doubles wins against Ellie Teague and Jessica Futch (6-3, 6-0) and Madison Bradshaw and Lucy Ray (6-3, 6-0).
Burnett took a hard-fought win versus Pickens. She won a 7-3 tiebreaker before a 7-5 loss in the second set. The third set used a tiebreaker, and Burnett came away with a 10-5 win. Teague and Futch snagged a 6-4, 6-0 victory.
Engle won her first set 6-3. She lost the second 6-4 and 13-11 tiebreaker loss in the third decided the match. PHS also defeated No. 3 single Bradshaw (6-0, 6-1) and the tandem of Lyric Lowman and Hannah Lowman (6-3, 6-2).
The Bobcats have a 5-9 record and the Lady Cats are 4-10. They both traveled to Dahlonega at press deadline to face Cherokee Bluff in the first round of the region tournament.
