Gilmer High tennis met Pickens and White County to continue their region tennis schedule.
Both matches were on the road, and the GHS Bobcats fell to Pickens last Monday, 3-2, and the Lady Cats lost, 4-1. GHS was in White County the next day. The Bobcats earned a 5-0 victory, and the Lady Cats lost by the same margin.
Gilmer’s tennis wins at Pickens were secured in doubles matches. Bobcats J.D. Taylor and Kolby Reece followed their opening set victory of 6-0 with a 6-3 win to clinch the match. No. 2 doubles Alex Miltiades and Chase Little won in straight sets as well, 6-2, 6-4.
The Dragons won singles matches over Gilmer’s Eder Martinez (6-0, 6-4), Nathan Hall (6-2, 6-3) and Miles West (6-1, 6-0).
Lady Cats Bree Burnette and Chelsey Griggs earned a 6-0, 6-4 win on the No. 2 doubles court. Lucy Ray and Madison Bradshaw lost 6-1, 6-4 in the No. 1 doubles spot. PHS earned singles wins over Lady Cats Lyla Engle (6-0, 6-2), Lyric Lowman (6-4, 6-4) and Katelyn Campbell (6-1, 6-1).
All of the Bobcats’ wins versus White County needed two sets. Martinez (6-1, 6-3) and Hall (6-1, 6-0) took care of business in the No. 1 and No. 2 singles spots. Taylor and Reece (6-4, 6-3) faced more resistance in their doubles match than Miltiades and Little did in their 6-1, 6-0 triumph. West lost 6-2, 6-1.
Ray and Bradshaw’s second set win (6-4) was sandwiched between losses of 6-2 and 6-3. Following Burnette and Griggs’ opening set loss of 6-0, they won the second, 7-5. The Warriors survived an 8-6 third set tiebreaker for the win.Singles Engle (6-1, 6-2), Lowman (6-1, 6-1) and Campbell (6-0, 6-1) were defeated.
The Bobcats are 4-3, and the Lady Cats are 0-7 on the season.
