Gilmer High tennis broke in its new courts with a pair of matches.
Lumpkin County was up first last Tuesday, and the visiting Indians defeated the GHS Bobcats and Lady Cats 5-0. Gilmer hosted Dawson County Thursday, and the Bobcats notched a 4-1 win. The Lady Cats fell, 5-0.
The Bobcat doubles team of Josh Burrell and Raymond Ewing won their opening set (6-4) versus Lumpkin but dropped the last two, 6-1, 6-3. The remaining matches only needed two sets.
On the singles court, the Indians were victorious over No. 1 Chase Little (7-7, 6-2), No. 2 Ryker Hice (6-3, 6-3) and No. 3 Harper Davenport (6-4, 7-6, 7-5 tiebreaker). No. 2 doubles Charles Addie and Aiden McCart were unable to win a game in their loss.
The Lady Cats are playing shorthanded as basketball players finish up their season. Lumpkin earned wins over No. 1 Addie Duggan and No. 1 doubles Lillian Reece and Harley Dupree without dropping a game. No. 2 doubles Autumn Spangler and Rosalie Ballew won a game in each set.
The Bobcats shuffled their lineup against Dawson. Alex Miltiades was in the No. 1 singles spot and, after dropping the first set (6-2), he won the second (6-1) and the tiebreaker, 10-7. No. 2 Little rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 triumph, and No. 3 Hice came out on top, 6-2, 6-3.
David Warren and Davenport were the No. 2 tandem and added the team’s fourth win in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2. Addie and McCart lost 6-0, 6-4.
Dawson’s No. 1 singles and No. 2 doubles topped the Lady Cats, 6-0, 6-0. Dupree and Reece fell by the same margin in the opening set and lost the second, 6-2.
The Bobcats and Lady Cats hosted rival Pickens at press deadline.
