The Gilmer Bobcats were on the field for a pair of soccer matches and added another win.
GHS hosted Cherokee last Tuesday for a nonregion battle. The two squads played an even match until the waning minutes when the Warriors netted a goal and held on for a 1-0 victory.
The Cats began their region schedule two days later at Heritage. The Generals found themselves down just seconds into the match, and it did not get any better. The Cats scored three goals in the first half and unleashed four more in the second for a 7-1 rout.
GHS outshot Cherokee 13-10. Nine of those shots were either deflected or saved, but only three shots came inside the 18-yard box. The Cats were on the attack for much of the first half. GHS had some solid scoring opportunities, but none of the 10 shots found the back of the net.
William Zarate may have had the best chance with 12:45 remaining in the half, but his close-range shot was high.
The Warriors flipped the script in the second half and kept the pressure on GHS. Cherokee’s efforts paid off with 4:15 left in the game. The Cats were unable to clear the ball after a corner kick, and CHS took a 1-0 lead. The Cats received a corner with 30 seconds to play but could not even the score.
GHS scored 50 seconds into the Heritage match with a long pass into the box for a goal. Less than three minutes later, another long pass over the top found a Bobcat for a 15-yard goal. The Cats went ahead 3-0 with a 16-yard goal with 6:32 left in the half.
Gilmer was back at it 1:30 into the second half with a 10-yard goal inside the near post. Twenty-eight seconds later, GHS led 5-0 with a 6-yard goal.
HHS got a goal back with 28 minutes on the clock when a General was fouled in the box. They made the penalty kick, but it would not be enough. GHS added a sixth goal a minute later with a 20-yard shot.
A cross and goal made the score 7-1 in the Cats’ favor with 7:30 left in the game.
The win improved Gilmer’s record to 5-5 overall and 1-0 in region play. Gilmer hosts Calhoun (4-5-1) Friday for a 7:30 match.
