After the Georgia High School Association’s reclassification process, Gilmer High’s “new” region looks much like it has over the previous two academic years.
The GHSA’s two-month process began with placing schools in athletic regions based on enrollment and location. The first set of region assignments was released Nov. 10.
Schools were given the opportunity to appeal their placement, and GHS did so. Gilmer was placed in a different region Nov. 18 with schools closer in proximity.
The reclassification process continued through the end of November and into the early weeks of December. Appeals to change classifications were heard, and the GHSA released final region assignments last Wednesday, Dec. 15.
GHS will compete in Region 7-3A for a two-year span beginning fall of 2022. Joining GHS and remaining in the region are Dawson County, Lumpkin County, White County and West Hall. Pickens, who dropped down from Class 4A, will join the region, as will Wesleyan, a private school located just outside of Norcross.
Gilmer’s previous region assignment from Nov. 18 included 10 teams. Its finalized seven-team region will give all sports more flexibility to schedule local rivals outside of the region schedule.
