All-region teams were recently announced, and Gilmer High School cheerleaders and basketball players were honored.
Gilmer’s first team basketball selections included Bobcats Cade Carter and Ethan Banks and Lady Cat Elly Callihan. Receiving an honorable mention were fellow seniors Lewis Mulkey for the boys and Lark Reece on the girls side.
All-region cheerleading selections included Emma Abernathy, Emma Reece and Bella Zagarola.
“Cheerleaders are nominated by coaches and selected on their strengths, weaknesses and potential,” head coach Naomi Esparza said of the all-region process.
Basketball selections were based on region coaches’ votes. Banks was the Bobcats’ leading scorer with 11.6 points on the year to go with 4.1 rebounds and 2.7 steals per game.
Carter battled a reoccurring injury throughout the season and still managed 10.2 points, 5.9 rebounds, 1.3 steals and 1.1 blocks per game.
Callihan also dealt with an injury and played in 17 of 25 games. She was the Cats’ top scorer (13.1), rebounder (8.6), free-throw shooter (75 percent) and also averaged 3.2 steals per game.
Reece totaled 9.1 points, 4.2 rebounds and 1.7 assists in 25 games.
Mulkey averaged nine points, 1.3 steals and .5 blocks per game while leading the Bobcats in rebounds (6.9).
