Five Gilmer High basketball players have been recognized by the region.
All-Region 7-3A honor rolls were released last week. Bobcat sophomore Jackson McVey was voted to the first team while junior Ryder Wofford landed on the all-region second team. Freshman Keegen Bryant received an honorable mention.
GHS Lady Cats junior Lucy Ray and sophomore Aliza Chastain received an honorable mention on the girls team.
In 25 regular-season games, McVey was Gilmer’s top scorer and averaged 19.5 points and 12.3 rebounds. He shot 55.1 percent from the field and blocked 63 total shots.
Wofford was there for 12 points and 5.5 rebounds per game and made 32 total three pointers at 37.6 percent. Bryant’s seasonal averages included 10.3 points, 2.8 assists, 1.2 steals, and he shot 78.9 percent from the free-throw line. He made 32 threes as well at 36 percent.
“It’s good to see what other coaches think about your players,” said head coach Jordan Hice. “I felt like we had a good chance of getting some other ones in there, but the region is very stacked with a bunch of players putting up similar offensive and defensive numbers. It’s always good to get players recognized.”
White County’s Jadon Yeh was the boys player of the year. Joining McVey on the first team were Wesleyan’s Thomas Chipman and Josh Kavel, Lumpkin’s Cal Faulkner and Trey Harvey of Dawson County.
Chastain led the way for the Lady Cats offensively with 7.3 points, three assists and 1.8 steals per game while shooting 78.8 percent from the free-throw line. Ray averaged 6.6 points, collected four rebounds per game and made 70.6 percent of her free throws.
“I’m really proud of both of them,” said head coach Dani Wright. “Aliza leads us in scoring, and Lucy isn’t far behind. They’ve worked really hard and have been my consistent ones every day at practice. It was good to see that other coaches saw the effort they put forth as well.”
Mary Mullinax of Lumpkin County and Wesleyan’s Chazadi Wright shared region player of the year honors. All-region first-team selections included Lumpkin’s Averie Jones and Lexi Pierce, Caroline Mullins of Pickens and White County’s Naomi Roberts.
