Eight Gilmer High School fall athletes have been recognized by region coaches.
GHS all-region softball selections include seniors Macy Hamby and Maddie Wright on the first team, Jacie Bennett on the second, while freshmen Phoenix Addie and Lily Fortune received an honorable mention.
Gilmer senior volleyball player Taylor McCormick was voted to the first team, junior Anneliese Vaughan received a second-team nod, and senior Adrian Thompson garnered an honorable mention.
Hamby spent time at shortstop, third base and pitcher, and she is a four-time all-region performer for the Cats. In 22 games, she was Gilmer’s leader in batting average (.433), on-base percentage (.478), runs (22), RBIs (18) and home runs (6).
Hamby posted a 3.58 earned-run average over 29 1/3 innings pitched and struck out 33. She started four games and earned one win.
Wright was a four-year starter at catcher and this marks her third all-region season. She led GHS with 13 stolen bases to go with a .355 average, .467 OBP, 19 runs scored and five RBIs.
Bennett was a four-year starter for GHS in the outfield and a three-time all-region player. She posted a .321 average, a .381 OBP, scored six runs, drove in 10 more and recorded one home run.
GHS depended heavily on Addie and Fortune when it came to pitching. Fortune started 18 games and earned seven wins. She fanned 70 across 87 1/3 innings and finished with a 3.93 ERA. Offensively, she drove in seven runs, scored nine and stole five bases.
Addie got a pair of starts and posted a 1-1 record. She struck out 15 and had a 5.67 ERA in 21 innings. At the plate, she hit .290 with a .362 OBP, knocked in 11 runs and scored five.
McCormick was a three-year starter at middle hitter for the Lady Cats. In Gilmer’s region matches, she was there for 48 kills, 54 digs, 14 blocks and 15 aces.
Setters Vaughn and Thompson provided 67 and 56 assists, respectively, in region matches. Vaughn also recorded 63 digs, 10 blocks, 17 aces and 21 kills. Thompson racked up 35 kills, 24 digs, 14 aces and five blocks.
