Fourteen Gilmer High football players were selected to all-region teams.
Region 7-3A coaches met last week to cast ballots and tally votes, and five Bobcats were selected to the all-region first team.
Senior Kyler Norton and fellow lineman, sophomore Sam Jones, and junior fullback Wyatt Stokes were voted to the first-team offense. Senior linebacker Aspen Hataway and sophomore safety Bo Cronic were first-team defenders.
Sophomore Hunter Britain was lauded for his play on both sides of the ball and was voted second-team all-region at running back and cornerback. Joining him on the offensive side were junior quarterback Issac Rellinger and sophomore offensive lineman Jack Puckett.
Remaining second-team all-region defenders include senior Blake Reece and junior Blane Banks along the defensive line, junior safety Grant Ballew and freshmen linebackers Douglas Callihan and Peyton Chancey.
First-year senior kicker Noah Turner also garnered a second-team all-region nod.
Receiving an honorable mention were senior defensive linemen Bryson Shubin-Gibbs and Ian Berry and sophomore Tyler Wright, senior receiver Ryder Wofford, junior tight end Charles Norman and sophomore center Austin Green.
“It was a great region meeting and refreshing to see some of our bitter rivals (Pickens) speak very highly of our kids,” said head coach Paul Standard. “The guy at Dawson (Sid Maxwell), who does not give out many compliments at all, I can’t count how many texts I’ve received telling us ‘good job’ and ‘good luck.’
“At the end of the day, when other coaches recognize the play of your players, that’s impressive. Our region has some pretty dang good football players.”
Because of Monday’s early deadline for Thanksgiving, final season stats were not available. They will be printed in a future edition.
