Jim Parmer is a candidate for Post 1 Commissioner in Gilmer County.
He is a longtime educator (50 years) and was a school administrator (pre-K through 12th grade) for 29 years. He retired as a command sergeant major (USAR) with 24 years in military service. He spent two years in the service during Vietnam as an English language instructor and 19 months activated during Iraqi Freedom 1 and 2 while he was principal of Oakland Elementary School.
“I had the opportunity to call the school every day from where I was (Iraq, Kuwait, Germany, Qatar) to recite the Pledge of Allegiance, moment of silence and morning announcements from each of those countries,” he said. “I had the pledge done in Arabic and German so the students would hear the language of those countries.”
He served on the Gilmer County Board of Education for eight years and is familiar with budgets, developing and operating within those budgets.
“As you can see, my background has been in leadership and service,” he said. “I have always been proud to serve my country, my schools and my community. I look forward to be able to serve the citizens of Gilmer County as a post commissioner.
“My only agenda is to be a servant to the citizens of Gilmer County, doing what is right and fair for all the citizens of the county. I am willing and able to work effectively with the other two commissioners.”
