Gilmer remembers fallen officer Brett Dickey

The morning may have been cold, but hearts were warm as Gilmer residents remembered Deputy Sheriff Brett Dickey. Dickey was killed in the line of duty on Feb. 13, 1996. Gilmer residents including family members, deputies and others gather on Feb.

FFA students win national honors

Gilmer County is less than 1 percent of America’s population, but 11 of its students won honors at the FFA’s national championship. The FFA is a national organization to prepare youth for careers in agricultural science, business and technology.

Players begin the first round of the Gilmer County Optimist Clubs Charity Mahjong Tournament Monday, Feb. 16. The event was sponsored by a number of local groups. More than 30 players participated in the tournament, with chances to win prizes.

355 home permits granted in Gilmer County

Hundreds of new homes will soon be built in Gilmer County, according to the Planning and Zoning Office. In 2025, the office gave out 355 residential home permits to people hoping to make new homes. The county has seven phases of subdivision projects planned too.

Olympic speed skater has Ellijay ties

Don VanLandingham of Ellijay is on pins and needles during the current fortnight of the Winter Olympics. His granddaughter, Corinne ‘Corie’ Stoddard, is on skates as a world class short-track speedskater competing on the American team.

Winter wonderland delights youngsters

Adults often see only cold, inconvenience, delay and danger when snow falls in the mountains. Tate Davis, a17-month old boy, experiences snow for the first time. But kids can see a world of beauty.  “It’s an amazing experience when they’re that little,” local father Austin Davis said.
