Ellijay council approves right of way process

The Ellijay City Council approved the first step in a process that could result in Shrine Club Drive eventually becoming a city street when meeting Monday, Oct. 21.

Firefighter suspended

A Gilmer County Fire and Rescue employee has been suspended pending an internal investigation following an arrest. Michael Paul Chester, 33, of Jasper, was arrested Oct. 9 by the Ellijay Police Department, and charged with false imprisonment, harrassing communications and criminal trespass.

Reading programs at elementary schools

Mountain View Elementary has begun a program that helps students receive free books. Volunteers from throughout the community donate $25 to Mountain View to purchase books that are given to the students at no cost. The volunteer then reads that book to the class.

Black bear roadkill, part 1

Sunday morning, June 2, 2019, I stood in my church clothes beside Georgia Highway 515 on the southbound shoulder near Joann Sisson Road while the traffic rocketed by going back toward Atlanta. I had answered a lady’s desperate plea on a community message board about a black bear roadkill.

Ellijay man dies in single-car accident

An Ellijay man was pronounced dead at the scene after his vehicle struck a tree and a power pole and caught fire. Wes Hackle, 23, of Ellijay, was traveling east on Clear Creek Road at 1 a.m. on Oct. 4 in a 2006 Kia Sorento, according to the Department of Public Safety Public Information Office.
Last year’s Apple Festival Parade took place on a drizzly Saturday morning, with hundreds of people turning out for the festivities. As of press time, this year’s weather forecast is for a cool, clear morning.

Apple Festival Parade to be held Saturday

The annual Apple Festival Parade will be held in downtown Ellijay Saturday, Oct. 19. Applications are required to participate in the parade. They can be downloaded from GeorgiaAppleFestival.org or picked up at the Gilmer Chamber office.Deadline to return applications is Friday, Oct. 18.
