A new book that traces several of Gilmer County’s pioneering families from the 1800s to the modern era represents several firsts for the Gilmer County Genealogical Society (GCGS), an all-volunteer organization dedicated to promoting and preserving family history.
Through his nonprofit outreach foundation, professional athlete Tim Tebow, right, is the driving force behind the annual Night to Shine. This year, the prom event for children and adults with special needs will be hosted internationally by 800 churches, one of which is Cartecay Baptist Church in Ellijay.

Three new Ellijay City Councilmembers joined two returning incumbents at the council’s first meeting of the year Monday, Jan. 27. Mayor Pro Tem Sandy Ott and councilmembers Tom Crawford and Kevin Pritchett were elected last November, as were incumbent councilmembers Katie Lancey and Al Fuller.

The third annual Apple Capital Commercial Dairy Heifer Show was held Saturday, Jan. 18, at the Gilmer Agricultural Center.

The comical creatures of the Hundred Acre Wood will be brought to life when Gilmer High School (GHS) Theatre’s young actors and actresses present their first show of the new year. The House at Pooh Corner will be presented at the GHS Linda Miller Theater Friday, Jan. 24-Sunday, Jan. 26.

First steps taken for elections

Qualifying fees have been set by the Gilmer County Board of Commissioners, the first step in getting ready for candidates to sign up and run for office. Commissioners set the fees at a special called meeting Jan. 14. Local candidates will qualify for office the week of March 2.
