Mountain bikers finish 8th at Peach State Championships

The Gilmer Cartecay Youth Mountain Bike Team concluded another season at the annual Peach State Championships.

The event was held Nov. 3-4 at Dauset Trails in Jackson, and Gilmer finished eighth out of 31 Division II teams.

The opening day of the event kicked off with Gilmer sophomore Lorenzo Alonso playing “The Star Spangled Banner” on violin, and head coach Larry Alonso believed it set the tone for the weekend.

“From that moment onward, Team Cartecay contributed to the success of the weekend by posting impressive race results, winning the series skills competition and leading the Fellowship of Christian Athletes service on Sunday morning,” he said.

Out of Gilmer’s 20 riders in attendance, 10 placed in top-20, including six in the top-10.

Evangelina Giet and Clare Moore took second and third, respectively, among sixth-grade girls, and Hannah Calabretta finished eighth in the junior varsity girls division and eighth in the state series.

Calabretta also received the National Interscholastic Cycling Association’s Spirit Award for recognition of her embodiment of the league’s core values.

Team Cartecay finished the season strong in the skills competition, with a tie for first overall.  Both Elsbeth Gray and Moore were first in the freshman girls and sixth-grade girl divisions, respectively.

The Gilmer Cartecay Mountain Bike Team will begin its 2019 preseason next April and is open to students in 6th through 12th grades from Gilmer and surrounding counties.
