Gilmer High soccer tops Gordon Central
Huff-Mosley Memorial Stadium was the site of last week’s frigid soccer scrimmages. Gilmer High School hosted Gordon Central Friday, and the Bobcats and Lady Cats both earned sound victories.
The Lady Cats took the field first and notched a 4-2 win with two goals scored by freshman Ashley Spagnola and one each from Grace Henderson and Tori Jack.
The Bobcats jumped to a 2-0 halftime lead and added three more goals in the second half for a decisive 5-0 win.
“We had a very slow and unsure start, mainly due to the lack of practice because of weather issues,” coach Simon Phipps said of the Bobcats’ match. “We have never played Gordon before, so we really didn’t know what to expect. Looking at common opponents, we knew it was going to be a close game. Every boy got some time on the field.
“We have an idea of game play aspects we need to work on, and we’re ready for a busy opening week of soccer.”
Senior Marvin Reynoso got the Bobcats rolling in the first half. He netted a goal and scored another from the penalty spot. Bobcat Nick Chmiel blasted a left-footed shot from 35 yards out for Gilmer’s next goal. Leading comfortably, Freddy Sanchez tacked on a fourth and Parker Benitez made it 5-0.
Gilmer traveled to North Murray at press deadline to begin the regular season. The Cats will be at home Friday against East Hall with games set for 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
Region play begins next Thursday at home versus Heritage with games scheduled for 5 p.m. and 7 p.m.
The JV Lady Cats host Fannin Wednesday at 5 p.m. Next Monday, the JV boys will host Pickens at 5:30 p.m.
