Gilmer receives $2.7M for Highway 515 work

State Sen. Steve Gooch (R-Dahlonega) recently announced more than $2.7 million will be awarded from the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) for Gilmer County. The funds are part of the more than $74 million awarded to transportation projects statewide.

“I am very thankful for the contract award GDOT is granting Gilmer County,” said Sen. Gooch. “Resurfacing roads is a key factor in ensuring the safety of drivers throughout our communities. I look forward to the completion of this project and these necessary improvements to our roads.”

Gilmer Commission Chairman Charlie Paris said the work would cover the stretch of 515 from the Highway 382 Spur to the Maddox Drive intersection, both northbound and southbound lanes.

He was asked if the county was matching funds for the project.

“No, it’s not something that’s saving us any money particularly, but it is absolutely improving the infrastructure that we have,” Paris said.

The project was advertised in November and bids were received on Dec. 15. Paris said the contract was awarded to Colditz Trucking out of Blairsville, and work is scheduled to be completed by year’s end.

More than 4.5 miles of milling, plant resurfacing, single-surface treatment paving and shoulder rehabilitation will be addressed through the project, according to the release.
