Local Democratic Party to meet
A meeting of Gilmer County Democrats to prepare for the Democratic caucus later this month will be held on Monday, Jan. 9, at 5 p.m. at El Rey Restaurant in East Ellijay. The purpose of the session is to prepare for the first official Democratic meeting, which will be a caucus approximately two weeks after the Monday meeting.
Information about the duties and responsibilities of Democratic committee members and officers will be distributed, along with a simple form by which attendees can express their interest in serving on the committee. Following the business session, attendees may, if they wish, order dinner and socialize.
The Gilmer County Democratic Committee will be formally elected by those in attendance at the caucus who are Democrats and live in the county. A notice will be posted in the Times-Courier as soon as the date and place are set.
Every Gilmer resident who is interested in helping the Democratic Party is cordially invited to attend. We particularly urge young Democrats and members of minority groups to attend.
Those who are not yet registered to vote will be helped to register as soon as possible.
The primary purpose of the committee is to identify and support Democratic candidates for local offices and, secondarily, for state and national offices. The committee also will keep track of legislation, both state and federal, of interest to progressive voters. Other activities will be decided by the committee after its election.
