Death under investigation
The Gilmer County Sheriff’s Office and Georgia Bureau of Investigation are looking into the death of a local man who passed away Sept. 18 following an altercation, according to Capt. Calvin Wilson of the sheriff’s office.
The man’s body was sent to the state crime lab for an autopsy, and authorities are still waiting on final results of the death.
“There are no apparent injuries that appeared to us ... that would cause us to believe that it was foul play,” Wilson said Monday. “He was involved in an altercation that same day. The (deceased) doesn’t appear to have recovered from his full (bodily) function after the fight.
“But we’re not ready to say (the other man) murdered him either.”
Wilson said the death is still under investigation, and the GBI is involved and working with the sheriff’s office.
“(The other man) is in custody on an unrelated charge, a probation violation,” he added. “Most likely he’ll be charged in some state in the altercation, but we’re not able to say he contributed to his death at this point in time.”
