Collins commits to town hall, area Democrats say

Gilmer County Democrats participated in a multicounty demonstration March 6 at the office of Congressman Doug Collins. The demonstrators called for Rep. Collins to vote to revise rather than repeal the Affordable Care Act (ACA), and to schedule a face to face town hall meeting with his constituents.

Counties participating in the demonstration included Dawson, Gilmer, Habersham, Hall, Lumpkin and Pickens. A small group talked with Rep. Collins in his office during the demonstration.

After the hourlong meeting, the chair of the Dawson County Democratic Party, Bette Holland, announced to the demonstrators that the usual promises about the ACA had been made. Specifically, Rep. Collins would support the provisions to continue family coverage for children to age 26 and the “no exception” rule for pre-existing conditions would remain.

More importantly, Holland said, was that Collins had promised to hold a town hall meeting with constituents “in the summer.” No specific date was given, but expect the demonstrators to diligently follow up the commitment.
