A tribute to Vietnam veterans
Jim Laubler, of the Patriot Guard Riders, puts up a white memorial cross bearing the name of late Ellijay Legionnaire and Vietnam veteran John Hannah at the Lions Club Fairgrounds Monday morning. The 200 crosses, which recognize Vietnam-era veterans who passed away in the line of duty or while living in Gilmer County after their time of service, were displayed at the special tribute in advance of the traveling Vietnam Memorial Wall exhibit arriving at the fairgrounds today. An 80-percent replica of the actual Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington D.C., the wall exhibit will be open for public viewing 24 hours a day from Thursday morning, May 17, until Sunday, May 20. Members of different local American Legion branches also put up, along South Main Street, a Memorial Day display of nearly 800 crosses that recognize deceased veterans from World War II up to the present day.
