Times-Courier wins Georgia Press awards
The Times-Courier staff garnered three awards in the weekly category during the 2018 Georgia Press Association Better Newspaper Contest.
Mountain Life Editor Michael Andrews won second place in feature writing, Keli Fredrickson Parker and former staff member Whitney Crouch Sherrill took third place in magazine cover design, and the entire staff earned a third place in magazine product.
The newspaper submitted all three magazines it produces annually, Home, Garden & Garage, Information Please and the Georgia Apple Festival edition, in the latter two categories.
News Editor Mark Millican noted the time and effort that go into printing a weekly newspaper, and how individuals on the staff work together in a team endeavor.
“Mike has a gift for writing a story, and always gets the most out of the people he interviews,” he said. “I always look forward to reading his feature articles, as well as his news copy. I’ll put Keli’s creative graphic work up against any designer’s at a weekly or daily newspaper in the state, and Whitney continues to contribute to our publications with her many talents, including design and writing.
“As for the staff award for the magazines, it signifies a true team effort. It’s above-and-beyond work for everyone, but also a labor of love knowing our readers and advertisers request and keep extra copies to show visitors to Gilmer County and the Ellijays, and to spotlight their businesses.”
