Sex offender from Ellijay arrested as fugitive
An Ellijay man who is a convicted sex offender in Georgia was arrested by investigators with the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office in Centre, Ala., last week as a fugitive, according to the Rome News-Tribune and the Cherokee County Herald in Centre.
Arthur Ray Brookshire, 56, who has lived on Rosegarden Lane and Jeff Drive, is wanted in Georgia for violation of sex offender registration requirements, according to Sheriff Jeff Shaver.
Brookshire was arrested at a campground in the Kirk’s Grove community May 30. Investigators charged him with an Alabama sex offender registration violation and obstruction of justice by using a false identity.
Brookshire was convicted of aggravated child molestation in February 1998, according to the GBI’s Sex Offender Registry website, but the location of the conviction is not given.
Brookshire has been charged by the Gilmer County Sheriff’s Office in the past with deposit account fraud, theft by deception, first-degree forgery, probation violation and twice failing to register as a sex offender, according to a jail spokeswoman.
He will eventually be extradited back to Georgia, Shaver told WEIS Radio in Centre.
