S.C. man drowns in Cherry Log lake
A South Carolina man on vacation drowned Saturday in a small lake in Cherry Log when he did not come up out of the water after going off a rope swing, witnesses and authorities said.
Kwame Josephus Kraque, 29, of Orangeburg, was swimming at a private lake on Clear Lake Road in the Boardtown community with friends late on the afternoon of Aug. 26.
“(He) had been swinging on a rope swing out over a small lake at this location, and had went underwater and did not immediately come back to the surface,” said Gilmer Fire & Rescue Chief Tony Pritchett.
“Friends at the scene attempted to make contact with the male, but efforts were unsuccessful.”
The 911 Center dispatched the rescue squad, and a dive team, to the “remote area” and a search was begun.
“The dive team began a search of the deeper water and then located the male shortly after the dive operation began,” Pritchett said. “Unfortunately, he was unable to be resuscitated.”
Coroner Jerry Hensley said the lake was about 2 acres in size, and that one of Kraque’s friends dove in and searched the water but could not find him.
