Public tax hearings today
The Gilmer County Board of Commissioners will hold two public hearings today (Aug. 29) regarding the property tax increase of 9.62 percent, according to advertisements in the Times-Courier. All concerned citizens are invited to the hearings at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. in the Jury Assembly Room of the courthouse. The board will convene again at 2 p.m. to potentially pass the millage rate.
“This tentative increase will result in a maintenance and operation (M & O) millage rate of 6.983 mills, and increase of .613 mills,” the ad states.
“Without this tentative tax increase, the millage rate will be no more than 6.370 mills. The proposed tax increase for a home with a fair market value of $200,000 is approximately $47.81, and the proposed tax increase for a non-homestead property with a fair market value of $75,000 is approximately $18.39.”
A report on the tax hearings, including public comment, and the millage rate potentially being passed, will be in the Sept. 5 issue of the newspaper.
