A Gilmer County man was arrested and is being held without bond after he assaulted his disabled mother, robbed her and attempted to strangle her dog, authorities said.

Kevin James Irish, 24, of 464 Fall Circle, was charged April 1 by the sheriff’s office with armed robbery, aggravated assault, false imprisonment, cruelty to animals, interference with a 911 call and criminal trespass, according to a jail media report. An additional charge of intimidation of a disabled adult is listed on a family violence-related incident report.

Although a drug charge is not listed, the incident report states the investigation determined drugs were involved.

Irish showed up at his mother’s home near where he lives in eastern Gilmer sometime after 7 p.m., and asked his mother to write him a personal check for $300. When she refused, his mother told Deputy Jason Holcombe her son “argued with her verbally before grabbing a fire poker and using it as a weapon to threaten her and hold her against her will.”

Irish used the fire poker to break a picture frame which caused glass shards to “fly about ... (and then) grabbed the family dog (a German shepherd) and attempted to strangle” it. Using the fire poker again, Irish forced his mother to write a $300 check and used his cellphone to make a mobile deposit, Holcombe wrote in the report.

The mother tried to call 911 with her cellphone, but Irish took it away from her, turned over her wheelchair, unhooked the garage door opener and took her car keys to keep her from leaving, the report states.

“(The mother) was eventually able to escape and crawl to her vehicle using an extra key she had hidden and fled from the residence,” Holcombe said, adding she drove to a neighbor’s house for help.

After a lookout was issued, Irish was found and arrested by Ellijay Police after being spotted on Highway 515 near Howard Simmons Road.

The mother had “visible red marks on her arms and the top of her left hand where Irish had attempted to pull her purse from her,” according to the report. She refused medical treatment, Holcombe said.

Irish is being held in the county jail without bond, according to a jail media report.
