Head coach Wes Tankersley and Marlen Hensley

Before the tense events of the fourth quarter and overtime where Gilmer sealed its postseason fate Friday, Nov. 9, GHS quarterback Marlen Hensley became the school’s seasonal passing leader. The record-setting pass came in the second quarter when Hensley rolled to his right and put just enough air under the ball to loft it over the defensive back and into the hands of tight end Austin Cole.
The 50-yard TD pass moved Gilmer ahead 13-0 with 10:57 left in the half.
Hensley finished the game by completing 11-of-18 passes for 185 yards and three TDs. Through 10 games, Hensley has 1,602 yards passing, 21 passing TDs and just two interceptions. The old yardage mark of 1,444 yards was set by Ben L. Kiker in 1964.
Hensley was quick to share the spotlight when asked about his record-setting season.
“I owe everything to my linemen. They’ve played great all year and my receivers have made big plays. Sometimes there have been short passes and they’ve turned them into 60- and 70-yard touchdowns,” he said.

Gilmer will continue its season Friday in the state playoffs versus Marist.
