Paul Nealey remembers working as a boy with his late father, Willard, at the old farmers co-op on the northern edge of town by the Ellijay River. “The water got so high when it flooded we had to move the feed and seed out of the way,” he recalled.

Two charged after meth lab discovered
An active meth lab was found Friday morning north of Ellijay after Gilmer County Sheriff’s Office deputies trusted their instincts when arresting a man with warrants out of Tennessee, authorities said. Allen Ray Smith, 46, of 108 Northcutt Road, was charged with seven counts of manufacturing methamphetamine after  a meth lab was discovered in a shack at his residence, according to the sheriff’s office. He has also been charged with parole violation, according to county jail records.

Kerri Henderson knew something was up when two strangers appeared in her neighborhood asking questions. “We had our antenna up,” said the mother of four girls. “One of the men asked the kids if their parents were at home, so when Jon (her husband) went out to talk to them they told him they were from the Department of Corrections and that a convicted sex offender wanted to live here.”

Residents who get a phone call telling them they’ve missed jury duty, or a call or letter  offering to get a property deed for them for a fee, should be aware it could be a scam, local officials say.

A tasty Thursday evening
The 2013 Taste of Ellijay, presented by the Gilmer County Chamber of Commerce, brought early evening crowds to the downtown Ellijay square Thursday, May 23. Attendees purchased sheets of $1 tickets that allowed them to pick from a variety of dishes offered by 15 food vendors set up along North Main Street. At top, Tracy and Shon Thomas, new owners of Walker’s Fried Pies and Barbecue, restock their pie display. At bottom, eventgoers sample hors d’oeuvres prepared by caterer Cindy King, right. Chamber president Paige Green said approximately 1,200 attended the event. 

Summer reading registration opens May 24

People of all ages are invited to dive into books this summer through the Gilmer County Library’s summer reading program. Registration begins May 24 and the free summer long celebration of reading will end July 31.

Jess Posey, at left, also included a showing of the film “The Isaiah 9:10 Judgment.” The faith-based documentary explores similarities between the fall of ancient Israel and tragic events that have occurred in America following Sept. 11, 2001.

Finding an opportunity is sometimes likened to opening a new door, and in the case of Ellijay resident Eric Strauss, this idea played out in a literal sense. 

It all started when he decided to take a photography class at Georgia Southern University in the 1980s. While he enjoyed capturing still images, his curiosity led him to discover an even greater passion.

For years, Ellijay resident Daniel Stockin thought water fluoridation was “good and safe and all-American (as) mom’s apple pie.” 

His perspective changed nine years ago when he began to study the issue for himself using the arsenal of skills and knowledge from his background in toxics assessment and safely managing hazardous materials.

Local water plants awarded
Both the Ellijay-Gilmer County water treatment and wastewater treatment plants were awarded recently by the Georgia Association of Water Professionals. The Cartecay Water Treatment Plant was given a Plant of the Year Award in the 3 to 8.99 million gallon division. The plant also received a Platinum Award, which recognizes five consistant years of safe drinking water permit compliance. The wastewater treatment plant received a Gold Award, which recognizes consistant compliance with pollutant discharge elimination permit guidelines. Columbine evoked in Victims’ Rights Week
When Craig Scott heard what he thought were firecrackers at school he guessed it was just seniors playing pranks and didn’t know they were actually gun shots that had just taken the life of his older sister, Rachel Scott — and that in just minutes his two best friends sitting beside him in the library would also be dead.

The date was April 20, 1999, and it was the first warm day of the spring season at Littleton, Col., home of Columbine High School.

Parks attends state tourney
While the Gilmer High School golf season ended four weeks ago at the Region 7-4A tournament, senior Bobcat Drew Parks trudged ahead. His 78 at the event held at Dalton Country Club not only qualified him for the Class 4A state meet, but allowed him to bypass sectionals.

Perry earns All-American status
Cameron Perry is a well-known name in Georgia wrestling. He added to his nationwide reputation with a sixth-place finish and All-American honors at USA Wrestling’s FILA Junior National Championships, April 19-20. Perry, a two-time defending state champion as a member of Gilmer High School’s wrestling team, described the tournament experience as “awesome.” He said his return to national wrestling came after taking a few summers off.

Horton resigns as Lady Cats’ coach
After nearly a quarter of a century as the Gilmer Lady Cats’ Head Basketball Coach, Herb Horton stepped down last Thursday, Feb. 28.

In a written statement addressed to “Gilmer Lady Cats’ basketball team supporters,” Horton cited his reason for leaving.
