Heaton set to explore Mars Hill
Jared Heaton’s journey to college may sound otherworldly, but Mars Hill University (N.C.) is just a 175-mile trip from Ellijay in a town with a population of around 2,000. He will play football for the Mountain Lions in the South Atlantic Conference beginning this fall.

A top-three finish at district qualified 21 of the county’s youth swimmers for the state meet. Gilmer and Coosawattee swimmers earned their spots at state last Thursday at the Georgia Recreation and Parks Association District 5 swim meet at Ft. Oglethorpe.

The 14U Gilmer County Recreation and Parks Department baseball all-stars clinched the 2015 Georgia Recreation and Parks Association District 5 championship and a state tournament berth last Saturday at Woody Field, downing Bartow County 15-2 and 11-1 in a doubleheader.

Exhibitions, camp highlight baseball offseason
The Gilmer Bobcat baseball players have joined the legions of athletes making use of their summer schedules to improve on the diamond. GHS played eight games over the previous week and a half, which included exhibitions against  Murray, Fannin and Cass high schools. Scores were kept, though head coach Jeff Thurman said he is focused on playing time rather than results.

Chris James spent two seasons as the Gilmer Bobcats starting quarterback and will attempt to do the same for the Valdosta State University Blazers over the next four. “It’s a huge honor,” James said of his chance to play college football. “I wanted to compete at the highest level possible and I think Valdosta is a great opportunity for that. I love the area. It feels like home and never gets cold there. I just like the winning tradition.”
Recreation department to hold ‘future Cats’ camps

Aside from Gilmer High School’s summer camps, the county’s youth will have an alternate outlet for activities this summer. The Gilmer County Recreation and Parks Department will hold its “Future Cats Summer Sports Camps” June 1 through July 31. Each week will consist of seven individual camps; one for each sport.
