Bailey Charles was looking for much more than just a place to play basketball when it came time to pick a college. With engineering programs dictating her decision, Oglethorpe University  offered what other local schools could not. In addition to offering engineering degrees at its Brookhaven campus, Oglethorpe has a dual-degree program in partnership with the Georgia Institute of Technology.

There was no shortage of top-flight talent at  the Southeastern 7-on-7 in Dalton, July 11-12. The Gilmer Bobcats were one of 32 teams in attendance and tasked with playing in the toughest 8-team bracket to begin the event Saturday. In round robin play, GHS posted  a 1-6 record to earn a spot in the consolation bracket on Sunday. The Cats’ difficult weekend continued as they lost twice and were eliminated.

Parks takes over highly touted program
Brittany Parks has taken over the helm of the Clear Creek Middle School softball program. Entering her third year as a pre-k teacher at Ellijay Primary School, Parks is a lifelong Gilmer County resident and tasked with carrying on the program’s winning tradition. She was previously an assistant to former head coach Amy Nunn, who recently joined the Gilmer High School softball staff as an assistant.

Exhibitions, camp highlight baseball offseason
The Gilmer Bobcat baseball players have joined the legions of athletes making use of their summer schedules to improve on the diamond. GHS played eight games over the previous week and a half, which included exhibitions against  Murray, Fannin and Cass high schools. Scores were kept, though head coach Jeff Thurman said he is focused on playing time rather than results.

The reconstruction of the Gilmer football coaching staff continues as the Bobcats kick off their summer slate of workouts and camps. Caleb Bagley officially joined the staff May 22 and will serve as the team’s offensive coordinator and offensive line coach.
