Parks attends state tourney
While the Gilmer High School golf season ended four weeks ago at the Region 7-4A tournament, senior Bobcat Drew Parks trudged ahead. His 78 at the event held at Dalton Country Club not only qualified him for the Class 4A state meet, but allowed him to bypass sectionals.

Perry earns All-American status
Cameron Perry is a well-known name in Georgia wrestling. He added to his nationwide reputation with a sixth-place finish and All-American honors at USA Wrestling’s FILA Junior National Championships, April 19-20. Perry, a two-time defending state champion as a member of Gilmer High School’s wrestling team, described the tournament experience as “awesome.” He said his return to national wrestling came after taking a few summers off.

After nearly a quarter of a century as the Gilmer Lady Cats’ Head Basketball Coach, Herb Horton stepped down last Thursday, Feb. 28.

In a written statement addressed to “Gilmer Lady Cats’ basketball team supporters,” Horton cited his reason for leaving.

Wrestling champions board dedicated
Gilmer County has always supported its athletic teams and Gilmer High School wrestling now has a brand-new champions board to honor its state placers. The board was constructed by Martin Robinson of Pride Signs and stretches across an entire wall of the the Noah Harris Center. It is a lavish upgrade over the previous board, which was painted particle material with stenciled names. The new board lists GHS’ 85 state placers by finish, year and weight class. 9 Bobcats receive all-region honors

Nine Gilmer Bobcat football players received all-region honors after the regions coaches’ votes were tallied last week.
GHS’ first-team selections included fullback Tyler Bertolini, receiver Connor Webber, tight end Austin Cole, defensive lineman Garrett Ralston and defensive backs Colt Henderson and Cameron Kephart. 
Landing on the second team were record-setting quarterback Marlen Hensley and offensive lineman Luke Davenport. Linebacker Jason Dover earned an honorable mention.

Hensley becomes top passer in school history
Before the tense events of the fourth quarter and overtime where Gilmer sealed its postseason fate, GHS quarterback Marlen Hensley became the school’s seasonal passing leader. The record-setting pass came in the second quarter when Hensley rolled to his right and put just enough air under the ball to loft it over the defensive back and into the hands of tight end Austin Cole.

GHS junior kicker Manny Lopez sets the school record Sept. 14 with a 44-yard field goal in Gilmer's 38-10 victory over Southeast Whitfield.
