Junior varsity Cats snag tournament title
Gilmer High School soccer combined to play six matches last week, but only two came against a region foe. In their meeting with the Heritage Generals last Thursday, the Bobcats and Lady Cats were downed 12-2 and 4-0, respectively.

Gilmer falls to Fannin in final inning
Gilmer baseball dropped recent nonregion games to an old region foe and Highway 515 rival. Last Friday, the Bobcats traveled to North Hall High School and dropped a five-inning game in sub-freezing temperatures, 10-0. GHS began this week with a 5-4 loss to the Fannin County Rebels, who erased a three-run deficit with two outs in the final inning to come out on top.

Lady Cats crowned region champs
A nine-point halftime deficit stood between the Gilmer Lady Cats and their first region basketball championship in 25 years. The Northwest Whitfield Lady Bruins saw their 23-14 advantage disappear over the game’s final two quarters, as the Lady Cats kept their foot on the gas and wore down Northwest with relentless pressure to come out on top, 50-40.

The most crowded trophy case in north Georgia just got a little tighter. The Gilmer High School wrestling team won the Class 4A traditional state championship for the third year in a row last Saturday at the Macon Coliseum.

Title No. 15 on the way?
The Gilmer Bobcat wrestling team finished its yearly appetizer at sectionals last week, and are ready to feast at the traditional state tournament. All 14 of GHS’ wrestlers placed in the top eight of their respective weight classes at the Class 4A west sectional, which was comprised of 34 teams from four regions. Along with east sectional teams from the remaining four regions, Gilmer was the only team in Class 4A to qualify 14 wrestlers for the state tournament in Macon this week.

The man who led the resurgence of the Gilmer High School football program has left the building. Wes Tankersley’s seven-year stint as the Bobcats’ head coach came to an end last Wednesday when he tendered his resignation and accepted the same position at Ridgeland High School.

The Gilmer Bobcats’ dominance over Class 4A has been solidified. Georgia’s top dual wrestling teams gathered in Macon last week and there was little they could do to slow Gilmer’s grapplers.
