Lady Cats crowned region champs
A nine-point halftime deficit stood between the Gilmer Lady Cats and their first region basketball championship in 25 years. The Northwest Whitfield Lady Bruins saw their 23-14 advantage disappear over the game’s final two quarters, as the Lady Cats kept their foot on the gas and wore down Northwest with relentless pressure to come out on top, 50-40.

The most crowded trophy case in north Georgia just got a little tighter. The Gilmer High School wrestling team won the Class 4A traditional state championship for the third year in a row last Saturday at the Macon Coliseum.

The Gilmer Bobcat wrestling team finished its yearly appetizer at sectionals last week, and are ready to feast at the traditional state tournament. All 14 of GHS’ wrestlers placed in the top eight of their respective weight classes at the Class 4A west sectional, which was comprised of 34 teams from four regions. Along with east sectional teams from the remaining four regions, Gilmer was the only team in Class 4A to qualify 14 wrestlers for the state tournament in Macon this week.

When the Gilmer High School Bobcats take the football field next season, they will be without their stalwart. As the final horn sounded at the end of Gilmer’s state playoff game versus North Oconee High School last month, it not only signaled the end of the 2014 season, but also that of coach Mark Pettit’s 25-year coaching career at GHS.

Never count the Gilmer Bobcats out of a football game. When it appeared all hope was lost last Friday at Doc Ayers Field in Cedartown, Gilmer shocked the seventh-ranked Bulldogs with a comeback in the waning seconds to win, 38-35.

Perry settles for silver at Pan-Am Games
Cameron Perry’s wrestling summer to remember continued with a silver medal at the Junior Pan-American Games in Santiago, Chile, July 12. Although, he might want to forget the calls that went against him in the gold-medal finals. Perry’s second-place finish came in Greco-Roman competition that required him to wrestle in the 60-kilogram (132 pound) weight class — the heaviest weight class he has participated in this summer.

While the Gilmer High School golf season ended four weeks ago at the Region 7-4A tournament, senior Bobcat Drew Parks trudged ahead. His 78 at the event held at Dalton Country Club not only qualified him for the Class 4A state meet, but allowed him to bypass sectionals.

Perry earns All-American status
Cameron Perry is a well-known name in Georgia wrestling. He added to his nationwide reputation with a sixth-place finish and All-American honors at USA Wrestling’s FILA Junior National Championships, April 19-20. Perry, a two-time defending state champion as a member of Gilmer High School’s wrestling team, described the tournament experience as “awesome.” He said his return to national wrestling came after taking a few summers off.
