Gilmer survives Fannin, 29–26
The Fannin County Rebels were poised to defeat the Gilmer Bobcats for the first time on the gridiron since 2010. But Fannin’s 19-7 lead to begin the second half quickly dissipated as the Bobcats clawed back into the game by scoring 22 unanswered points before holding on for a 29-26 victory.

Lady Cats fly by Northwest, Southeast
After a pair of nonregion losses Aug. 22, the Gilmer Lady Cats were back in the win column last week. GHS hit the softball diamond for a pair of region games and crushed Southeast (7-1) and Northwest (8-0). The victories pushed the Cats’ record to 5-0 in region play and 9-2 overall.

GHS invades Rebel territory, wins tournament
It was a dream week for the Gilmer Lady Cats volleyball team. They began last week by spoiling Dalton’s senior night festivities with  a three-game victory. Four days later, after the Bobcat football team defeated Fannin, the Lady Cats made the same trip and left as champions of the Rally on the Ridge tournament.

The Clear Creek Middle School Bobcats have been grinding through summer workouts and conditioning in anticipation of the upcoming season. With the weight of a semifinal playoff loss to the Rabun County Wildcats still fresh in mind, head coach Jerry Barnes has the Bobcats focused on tackling not only Rabun, but every opponent they will face.

Many came, but only the best of the best were left standing at the end. The top prep wrestlers in the country made their way to U.S.A. Wrestling’s Cadet and Junior National Championships in Fargo, N.D., July 18-25. Gilmer grapplers Matthew Waddell and Ryan Crump were in attendance to test their skills against the nation’s elite.
