A tasty Thursday evening

The 2013 Taste of Ellijay, presented by the Gilmer County Chamber of Commerce, brought early evening crowds to the downtown Ellijay square Thursday, May 23. Attendees purchased sheets of $1 tickets that allowed them to pick from a variety of dishes offered by 15 food vendors set up along North Main Street. At top, Tracy and Shon Thomas, new owners of Walker’s Fried Pies and Barbecue, restock their pie display. At bottom, eventgoers sample hors d’oeuvres prepared by caterer Cindy King, right. Chamber president Paige Green said approximately 1,200 attended the event.

Summer reading registration opens May 24

People of all ages are invited to dive into books this summer through the Gilmer County Library’s summer reading program. Registration begins May 24 and the free summer long celebration of reading will end July 31.

National Day of Prayer service held

At right, attendees join hands during the conclusion of a National Day of Prayer service held Thursday, May 2, at the Gilmer County Courthouse Jury Assembly Room. The service, conducted by the Rev. Jess Posey, at left, also included a showing of the film “The Isaiah 9:10 Judgment.” The faith-based documentary explores similarities between the fall of ancient Israel and tragic events that have occurred in America following Sept. 11, 2001.

Local sculptor inspired by county’s natural beauty

Finding an opportunity is sometimes likened to opening a new door, and in the case of Ellijay resident Eric Strauss, this idea played out in a literal sense.
It all started when he decided to take a photography class at Georgia Southern University in the 1980s. While he enjoyed capturing still images, his curiosity led him to discover an even greater passion.

Kids Ferst marks six years promoting childhood literacy

Kids Ferst volunteers celebrated their six-year anniversary of bringing the Ferst Foundation for Childhood Literacy (FFCL) program to Gilmer County with a registration drive and birthday cake at the March for Babies Friday, April 12. The program provides age-appropriate books, monthly by mail, to preschoolers from birth through five years of age. “Read to lead — read to succeed” is the motto for the organization’s volunteers, which sums up their mission of preparing all children for learning success when entering kindergarten. The books are free to the enrolled families and funding is made possible through the generosity of many individuals, businesses, churches and organizations in our community.

CERT classes to begin March 19

Starting Tuesday, March 19, Gilmer County residents will have the opportunity to take part in a seven-week CERT training course. Offered as an offshoot of Gilmer Fire and Rescue, classes will begin at 6 p.m., each consecutive Tuesday inside Coosawattee River Resort in the fireplace room at the property owners’ association building.
The evening training sessions are designed to equip members of the community with the knowledge and skills needed to assist their neighbors during a natural disaster or other event when professional responders are not immediately available.

Fort Mountain park issues photo call for 75th birthday celebration

The Civilian Conservation Corps built many of the amenities at Fort Mountain State Park, including trails, picnic shelters and the stone fire tower pictured above. Ellijay woman gives gift of life to total stranger

Every 10 minutes a new name is added to the national organ transplant waiting list, according to Donate Life America. Unfortunately, each day an average of 18 people die from the lack of available organs for transplant. Those statistics were hard to accept for Ellijay’s Jodie Parker. She decided she needed to do her part to help, and on Sept. 4, as an altruistic living kidney donor, she gave the gift of life to a complete stranger.

Genealogical Society meeting held

Guest speaker for the November meeting of the Gilmer County Genealogical Society was Sally Sue Bradley. Mrs. Bradley is a member of the Sequoyah Daughters of the American Revolution. Through her lecture she provided insight into the Revolutionary War regarding the British Army in America.

Three members of Girl Scout Troop 8061 received their Silver Awards during a ceremony Thursday, Oct. 25. Family members, fellow Girl Scouts and members of the community gathered in the Bobcat Den to celebrate the girls’ achievement.

Chamber Holds Open House for New Office
A large crowd gathered for a ribbon cutting and open house at the new Gilmer County Chamber of Commerce office Friday, June 22, 2012.
Attendees enjoyed partaking of a barbecue lunch and touring the newly remodeled facility, which is located in the former Community and Southern Bank branch at 696 First Avenue in East Ellijay.

The group takes its name from an old general store on Roy Road once owned by a relative of Worley’s that was an encampment for gold prospectors in east Gilmer County. Catch the band, which plays a mix of folk, classic rock and singer/songwriter favorites, Friday, Oct. 12, at Jilly’s Pub or Saturday, Oct. 20, outside the deli located downtown behind the North Star Emporium.
