Waddell turns heads at nationals
Matthew Waddell’s fruitful 2016 wrestling campaign continued last week at the ASICS/Vaughn Junior National Championships in Fargo, N.D.
The tournament is widely known as “Fargo Nationals,” and is the premiere event for youth wrestlers in the United States. Waddell wrestled in the 182-pound division and placed third in Greco-Roman and fifth in freestyle, which allowed him to earn two All-American distinctions.
Waddell’s impressive placements are the latest in a long line of achievements this year. In February he captured the Class 4A state championship during the high school season before winning the Greco and freestyle state titles with the Bobcat Wrestling Club. He also placed third at the High School Coaches Association’s National Wrestling Championships in April. Waddell was later ranked the No. 13 182-pound junior by Wrestling USA Magazine.
A full recap of Fargo Nationals will appear in next week’s Times-Courier.
