Mountain bike season begins
The Gilmer Cartecay Youth Mountain Bike Team competed in its first race last weekend at Road Atlanta.
Local participants Evangelina Giet and Emma Moore earned spots on the winner’s podium and nine others notched top-20 finishes.
Race lengths ranged from 8.6 to 4.3 miles, and temperatures soared into the low-90s, which increased the difficulty of the endurance event for the athletes, according to head coach Larry Alonso.
Twenty-one of the club’s 24 registered racers competed at the event, and Giet placed second among sixth-grade girls, while Moore was fourth in the freshman girls division.
“All the kids have worked very hard to prepare for the season and have been practicing (for nine weeks) on some of the most difficult trails our county has to offer,” said Alonso.
“The future looks bright for our team moving forward. I believe we will continue to see successes on the podium, but that doesn’t begin to touch the transformational successes each of the 24 athletes have enjoyed by engaging in this sport.”
The event was sponsored by the Georgia Interscholastic Cycling League (GICL), who are members of the National Interscholastic Cycling Association.
The GICL boasts 850 competitors in grades sixth through 12th across 55 teams. The Gilmer Cartecay team is currently ranked ninth out of 31 GICL Division II teams.
The next event will be Saturday, Sept. 22 and Sunday, Sept. 23 at Allatoona Creek in Acworth.
