Vernon Dobbs West
Mr. Vernon Dobbs West, 80, of Ellijay, died Saturday, Dec. 3, 2016, at Piedmont Mountianside Hospital following a brief illness.
He was born in East Ellijay to the late Newman and Flora Mae West. He was a 1957 graduate of Gilmer High School and attended Young Harris College. He was employed by the NA West Block Company for over 40 years. During those years, he was active in the Southeast Concrete Products Association. He was an active member of the Ellijay Lions Club, serving in several capacities. He was a member of the Good Samaritan Catholic Church. Vernon enjoyed traveling, fishing, cooking, Georgia Bulldog football and growing red peppers. He was a very generous and honest person. He loved his family and Ellijay. He could be seen around town wearing his hat with a cigar in hand. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
He is preceded in death by brother and sister-in-law, Jerry and Joyce West.
He is survived by loving wife of 38 years, Mary Ellen (Bunny) West; close friend and sister-in-law Louise Neligan, of Chattanooga; brothers and sisters-in-law, Jack and Lillian West, of Ellijay; Mack and Ann West, Ronnie and Sue West, all of East Ellijay; Larry and Gail West, of Rex; sisters and brother-in-law, Carolyn West Billue, and Susan and Joe Winkler, of Atlanta; and numerous nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews..
Funeral mass will be held at the Good Samaritan Catholic Church, Ellijay, at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 7, with Father Carlos Vargas officiating.
Interment will be in the East Ellijay Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Mark West, Adam McVey, Brannon McVey, Brady West, Chad West, Chris Callahan, Nathan West, Jacob Callihan, Cory West and Bryan Crump.
Flowers are accepted or contributions can be made to the St. Vincent de Paul Society, 55 Church Street, Ellijay, GA, a charity that provides help to those in need in Gilmer County.
